Our History

In 1997 the Senior Needs Committee of Wells and Ogunquit formed to address the needs of local seniors. Outgrowing its humble beginning in the Wells Library and subsequent small spaces, the Committee began a grassroots campaign to collect donations from local residents, businesses and grants with the dream of building an independent Senior Center. The land for the Center was generously donated and diligent fundraising continued for years. In 2000 the group received their non-profit designation. The project finally received a large Community Development Block Grant for construction in February 2002, its fifth year of applying for the grant. To meet wetlands construction challenges, an additional $40,000 in donations was raised locally and a USDA loan was procured. On July 17, 2004, The Center’s Grand Opening was attended by more than 800 people including politicians, residents and donors.

The Wells Ogunquit Center at Moody has independently operated successfully since and currently provides hundreds of programs and services annually for more than 600 members. A large variety of social, intellectual and well-being programs are offered, as well as trips, games, crafts, and holiday and informative events. Members and residents remain extremely vested in The Center, providing thousands of volunteer hours annually. The Center relies upon membership dues, fundraising, grants, and donations for its support.

Designed specifically as a Senior Center, the Wells Ogunquit Senior Center building features include:
